Signs are the costume every planet wears. Learn the four elements, the three modalities and the ruling planet of each rashi — and you can read the temperament of any placement at a glance.
In Part 1 we called the sign the "how" of the chart — the style and temperament an energy expresses. Each of the twelve rashis spans exactly 30° of the zodiac and is defined by three things: its element, its modality, and its ruling planet. Master these three keys and you never have to memorise sign "personalities" again — you can derive them.
The four elements (Tattvas)
The element tells you the basic nature of the energy:
Fire (Agni) — Aries, Leo, Sagittarius: drive, inspiration, courage, spirit.
Earth (Prithvi) — Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn: practicality, patience, material stability.
Air (Vayu) — Gemini, Libra, Aquarius: intellect, communication, relationships, ideas.
Water (Jal) — Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces: emotion, intuition, sensitivity, depth.
The three modalities (how the energy moves)
The modality tells you how the sign acts:

Combine element + modality and the sign almost reads itself. Movable Fire (Aries) = bold initiator. Fixed Water (Scorpio) = intense, unshakeable depth. Dual Air (Gemini) = flexible, talkative intellect.
