The 9 Planets of Vedic Astrology (Navagraha)

The grahas are the actors of your chart. Each one carries a personality, a set of significations, and a natural tendency to help or to challenge. Learn them and you can read any placement.

Vedic astrology works with nine grahas — the seven classical planets plus the two lunar nodes. It does not use Uranus, Neptune or Pluto. Everything a kundli predicts comes from how these nine act, where they sit, and which houses they rule.

GrahaSignifiesNature
Surya (Sun)Soul, father, authority, health, ego, governmentMild malefic
Chandra (Moon)Mind, mother, emotions, public, comfortBenefic (waxing)
Mangal (Mars)Energy, courage, siblings, land, conflict, driveMalefic
Budh (Mercury)Intellect, speech, business, logic, communicationNeutral / benefic
Guru (Jupiter)Wisdom, wealth, children, guru, dharma, expansionGreat benefic
Shukra (Venus)Love, marriage, beauty, luxury, art, vehiclesBenefic
Shani (Saturn)Discipline, delay, labour, longevity, karma, justiceMalefic
RahuDesire, obsession, foreign, technology, sudden riseMalefic (shadow)
KetuDetachment, spirituality, past mastery, sudden lossMalefic (shadow)

Benefic and malefic — but never absolute

Natural benefics (Jupiter, Venus, strong Mercury, waxing Moon) tend to protect and bless. Natural malefics (Saturn, Mars, Sun, Rahu, Ketu) bring friction, discipline and change. But this is only the starting tendency. The real verdict depends on the houses a planet rules from your Lagna — a natural malefic ruling good houses can become your best friend, while a natural benefic ruling difficult houses can disappoint. This is why Vedic astrology never judges a planet by reputation alone.

Exaltation, debilitation and dignity

Each graha has a sign where it is exalted (strongest) and the opposite sign where it is debilitated (weakest). Knowing these is one of the fastest ways to gauge a chart.

About Rahu and Ketu: they own no sign and are always exactly opposite each other, forming the karmic axis of the chart. Rahu magnifies and craves whatever it touches; Ketu withdraws and spiritualises whatever it touches. Always read them as a pair — what Rahu chases, Ketu has already let go of.

Is a planet strong or weak? A quick checklist

Stronger when: in its own / exalted / friendly sign, in a Kendra or Trikona, free from affliction, and not combust (too close to the Sun).

Weaker when: debilitated, in an enemy's sign, combust, in a dusthana (6/8/12), or hemmed between two malefics.

Strength decides how fully a planet can deliver what it promises. A well-placed Jupiter showers its blessings; a weak Jupiter promises them but struggles to deliver. In the next lesson we will combine planets, signs and houses to read a chart as a whole.
