Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used planetary timing system in Vedic astrology. While your birth chart shows what is promised in life, the dasha system shows when it unfolds. Life is divided into a sequence of planetary periods, ruled in turn by the nine grahas, across a full cycle of 120 years (“vimshottari” means 120). Whichever planet’s period — or Mahadasha — is running “switches on” the results that planet carries in your chart.
The main periods always run in the same fixed order, with fixed lengths that add up to 120 years:
| Order | Mahadasha (Planet) | Years |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ketu | 7 |
| 2 | Venus (Shukra) | 20 |
| 3 | Sun (Surya) | 6 |
| 4 | Moon (Chandra) | 10 |
| 5 | Mars (Mangal) | 7 |
| 6 | Rahu | 18 |
| 7 | Jupiter (Guru) | 16 |
| 8 | Saturn (Shani) | 19 |
| 9 | Mercury (Budh) | 17 |
That is 7 + 20 + 6 + 10 + 7 + 18 + 16 + 19 + 17 = 120 years, the traditional full human lifespan.
Each Mahadasha is divided into nine sub-periods called Antardashas (or bhuktis), one for every planet, in the same Vimshottari order and proportional to their lengths. Each Antardasha is further divided into Pratyantar Dashas for finer timing. So the Mahadasha sets the broad theme of the years, the Antardasha narrows it to months, and the Pratyantar refines it to weeks. Astrologers always read these together — for example, “Jupiter Mahadasha, Venus Antardasha.” The calculator above generates all three levels for you.
Your starting Mahadasha is decided by the nakshatra (lunar mansion) your Moon occupies at birth. Each of the 27 nakshatras is ruled by one of the nine planets, and that planet’s dasha is already running when you are born — with the elapsed portion calculated from exactly how far the Moon has travelled through the nakshatra. This is why an accurate birth time and place matter: they fix the Moon’s position, and that fixes your entire dasha timeline. The calculator finds your Moon nakshatra automatically from your birth details.
To judge whether a running period is supportive or challenging, analyse the dasha-lord like any planet in your chart:
A strong, well-placed dasha-lord tends to deliver its promised results during its period; a weak or afflicted one brings the struggles of the houses it governs. This is the bridge between a static birth chart and the unfolding events of a real life.
