Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ashtakoot Milan (Guna Milan)?

Ashtakoot Milan is the Vedic system of kundli matching for marriage. It analyses 8 compatibility factors (kootas) — Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, and Nadi — and assigns points to each. The maximum score is 36 gunas. A score of 18 or above is considered acceptable for marriage.

How many gunas are needed for marriage?

According to the classical Ashtakoot system, 18 out of 36 is the minimum acceptable score. 24–32 is considered good compatibility. Above 32 is excellent. However, the score alone is not sufficient — Nadi dosha (which scores 8 points) and Bhakoot dosha (7 points) are individually checked even if the total score is high.

What is Nadi Dosha in kundli matching?

Nadi Dosha occurs when both partners have the same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya, or Antya). It scores 0 out of 8 in Ashtakoot and is considered a serious dosha in marriage matching because it relates to the health of offspring and physical compatibility. Exceptions apply based on nakshatra lordship and other chart factors.

Can kundli matching be done by date of birth only?

Yes — Ashtakoot Guna Milan is calculated primarily from the Moon nakshatra (janma nakshatra) of both partners, which is determined by date, time, and place of birth. If exact birth time is unavailable, matching is done using the Sun sign nakshatra or rashi, but accuracy is reduced. Full birth time gives the most precise result.

Is kundli matching necessary for love marriages?

In Vedic tradition, kundli matching is recommended for any marriage — love or arranged — as it reveals long-term compatibility patterns, dosha risks, and timing of major life events. For love marriages, many couples check matching after the relationship has formed, primarily to identify and mitigate doshas like Mangal Dosha or Nadi Dosha.
