Planetary Aspects (Drishti): How Planets Influence at a Distance

A planet does not only act where it sits — it also "looks at" other houses and shapes them. Learn the aspect rules and your readings suddenly become three-dimensional.

So far we have placed planets in houses. But a graha also projects its energy across the chart through drishti — its aspect, or "sight". The house a planet aspects feels its influence almost as strongly as the house it occupies. Miss the aspects and you miss half the chart.

The universal 7th aspect

Every one of the nine grahas casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself — the house directly opposite. Count seven signs forward (including the planet's own sign as 1) and that house receives the planet's full gaze.

Example: a planet in the 1st house aspects the 7th. A planet in the 3rd aspects the 9th. A planet in the 10th aspects the 4th. This opposite-house aspect is shared by all planets, benefic and malefic alike.

The special aspects of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn

Three planets are given extra full-strength aspects beyond the 7th. These are among the most important rules in chart reading:

PlanetAspects (from itself)Flavour of the aspect
Mars (Mangal)4th, 7th, 8thEnergising, forceful, can agitate or protect
Jupiter (Guru)5th, 7th, 9thExpanding, blessing, protective — the most benefic gaze
Saturn (Shani)3rd, 7th, 10thDisciplining, slowing, maturing through pressure

So Mars in the 1st house aspects the 4th, 7th and 8th. Jupiter in the 1st aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th — which is why Jupiter in the Lagna is so prized: it blesses the houses of children/intelligence and fortune at the same time. Saturn in the 1st aspects the 3rd, 7th and 10th, pressing on effort, partnership and career.

About Rahu and Ketu: the nodes always cast the 7th aspect on each other (they sit exactly opposite). Many astrologers also give them the 5th and 9th aspects, similar to Jupiter. At minimum, always read their opposite-house influence.

How to use aspects in a reading

Reading an aspect is simple once you know who is looking and what they rule:

1. Who is aspecting? A natural benefic (Jupiter, Venus) tends to support and protect the house it sees; a natural malefic (Saturn, Mars, Rahu) tends to pressure or test it.

2. What does it rule? A planet brings the affairs of its own houses to whatever it aspects. The 9th lord aspecting the 10th links fortune to career; the 6th lord aspecting the 7th can bring friction to partnership.

3. How strong is it? A strong planet delivers its aspect fully; a weak or afflicted planet aspects with reduced force.

Combine the occupant of a house with everything that aspects it, and you finally see the full set of forces shaping any area of life.
